In just over a decade, stakeholders spanning the industry from farmers, ginners, spinners, suppliers and manufacturers to brand owners, retailers, civil society organisations, donors and governments, have partnered together for change. Today, there are more than 2,300 members in the Better Cotton network.
Better Cotton is about focussing on who and what matters in creating a more sustainable future: farmers, farmworkers, their communities, and their education, knowledge and well-being.
Field-level partners work with these communities to help achieve better yields, improved working conditions and greater financial security. Better Cotton is helping almost 4 million people whose working lives are connected to cotton production.
Better Cotton aims to support farming communities socially, environmentally and economically. With better soil and water management, less use of pesticides and greater resilience to climate change come opportunities.
For smallholders, it means improved crops. For farming communities, it means decent work, gender empowerment and less inequality. And for industrial level farmers, it leads to new and more innovative practices, where sustainability translates into profitability.
